"The Crucible" by Arthur Miller
"The Crucible" is more history than a Halloween or
horror story but because of how dark it is I consider it
something to read during Halloween. It is based on the Salem
witch trials but Arthur Miller gave fictitious names to some. I
have always had a fascination with the witch trials because we
only ever had a paragraph about it in our history studies. This
book was so good. It was written as a play and I know they show
the play in Salem all the time. It was so good I read it in a couple
of hours. If you have not heard about the Salem witch trials and
what caused it you want to read this book. Some of the
young puritan girls made up stories about some of the adults in
the town who they didn't like by saying they flew through their
window with Satan and signed his book or sent a bird or to their
home to hurt them. The adults believed them because of
how they seemed to believe in the supernatural back then. It is
sad to think how these innocent people were hung and one man
pressed because some little kids started it. It seems everyone was
accusing their enemies after this and some even after land
disputes. It got so out of hand and the end so many were put in
jail and about 21 or so were hung and one man was pressed.
It is a dark time in our history that many would want to hide
which is why I probably did not learn too much about it until
I got a couple of pages about it in college and started
researching it. If you want to learn more about the witch
trials you should definitely read this book.
